Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team came from behind to tie seventh-ranked Union College 1-1 in a Liberty League contest Saturday at Wachenheim Field.
The physical contest ended with a combined 35 fouls, five yellow cards, and one red card.
With a third straight tie, the Thoroughbreds move to 3-6-5 and 0-1-4 in conference play. The tie also records the second time this season that Skidmore broke even with a top-10 opponent. Union moves to 10-2-1 and 3-1-1 in Liberty League play.
The Dutchmen went ahead 1-0, when Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, N.Y.) stole the ball at midfield and pushed it forward to sophomore Paul Angelo (Albany, N.Y.) for the breakaway goal at 30:34.
The Thoroughbreds, despite playing a man down for most of the second half, tied the score at 77:28 when Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) fired a header into the net off of a corner from freshman Doug Yeates (Richmond, Vt.).
Union held a 7-2 shot advantage in overtime, but was denied by Skidmore keeper Jake Densen (Summit, N.J.) who made a key save with five seconds left on a point-blank shot by Jon Bellock (Manchester, Conn.). Densen had four saves, while Union's Rob Kramer (Westport, Conn.) finished with seven.
The Thoroughbreds are at Rensselaer Oct. 20.
