SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- The 26th ranked Skidmore College men's tennis team won a hard fought 5-4 decision over defending NCAA Division III national champion Williams College, Saturday at Wenger Courts.
With the win, the Thoroughbreds (9-6) avenge last year's NCAA regional final loss to the Ephs. Williams (11-4) is ranked fifth nationally.
Skidmore took a 2-1 lead after doubles, behind the 8-0 win at number one by
Oliver Loutsenko and
Danny Knight over Matt Micheli and Alex Schidlovsky.
Loutsenko, ranked ninth in the Northeast in singles won his battle at number one singles against fourth ranked Matt Micheli 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
With the match tied 4-4 it came down to number six singles and a dramatic three-set win by
Gabe Steerman over Brian Astrachan 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (2).
"A great team performance," said Skidmore coach Nate Simms. "
Gabe Steerman was clutch for the second match in a row, winning it all with the match tied at 4-all. The guys should be really proud."
Skidmore is at Middlebury on April 22.
