CLIFTON PARK — A couple of years after Darren Bennett got the job as the head coach for the Skidmore College women's basketball team and had his feet planted firmly beneath him in the role, he reached out to friend Pat Swan with a grand message wrapped in simple terms.

"Hey, man, let's start a golf tournament to fight cancer," Bennett told the Ballston Lake resident. "We'll figure out where the money can go later."

That was roughly 10 years ago. Now, Bennett, Swan and others are making ready for the eighth annual Teeing Off on Cancer Golf Classic, an Aug. 31 outing at the Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs. For the first six years, funds raised went to the American Cancer Society, but this year's tournament will be the second one that donates its proceeds to the Catie Hoch Foundation, which was established in honor of the 9-year-old Clifton Park girl who passed away in 2000 after a battle with neuroblastoma.
