Women's basketball beats Union, stays perfect in league play

Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Skidmore College women's basketball team held Union to a season-low 35 points en route to a 49-35 Liberty League win, Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.

The Thoroughbreds move to 10-5 overall and 6-0 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen fall to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Molly McLaughlin led all players with 11 points, Kelly Donnelly added nine points and five rebounds and Angela Botiba chipped in with six points and 10 boards.

Union used an 8-3 run in the first to jump out to a 14-9 lead with 5:28 to play in the half. Erin Lyons extend the Dutchwomen's lead to six, getting a jumper to fall after Amber Holgate made a free throw. The Thoroughbreds pulled back within three at the break as McLaughlin hit a jumper with five seconds remaining.

Skidmore bounced back from a poor-shooting first half in the second, opening a 19-point lead with 5:30 left in regulation after a 21-2 run. The Thoroughbreds went 12 for 32 from the field in the second frame while limiting Union to 17 points on 17.9% (5-28) shooting.

Cailin Schmeer scored a team-high nine points for the Dutchwomen. Jenni Barra had seven points and Kate Thompson produced six points and 10 rebounds.

"Tonight's game was a great test of fortitude and mental toughness," said Skidmore head coach Darren Bennett.  "We could have broke in the first half when our shots were not falling. We were missing chip shots and it seemed like nothing could go our way.  We knew it was going to be tough, but our message to our team all week was grin and bear it and play tough defense and our offense will follow.  Our ability to hold them off in the first half paid dividends in the second and we were able to get our offense clicking.

"I'm very proud of playing tough and sticking to the game plan.  It was a very nice road win versus a really good opponent.  I feel sorry for the fans as they did not see the best of offense from either team, but when the two top defensive teams meet up, it has potential for an ugly offensive night and tonight it played out.

"No rest as we're back at it again tomorrow versus a strong, athletic team that can get hot at anytime and is playing good basketball."

Skidmore hosts William Smith at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.
