Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team fought its way back from a five-goal second half deficit to pull within one of RPI but it could not get any closer, falling 15-14, Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
Leading 8-6 at the half, the Engineers (9-4, 7-0 Liberty League) scored three goals in the first 2:10 of the second half to push ahead 11-6. The Thoroughbreds (4-9, 3-4) countered with three unanswered goals midway through the half to make it 12-10. After Rachel Scofield extended the RPI lead to three,
Spencer Morgan and
Brittney Dioneda scored back-to-back goals to bring Skidmore within one. The teams traded goals over the final 7:14, as the Engineers managed to hang on for the 15-14 win.
Tyler Phillips led the Thoroughbreds with four goals and one assist. Morgan added four goals and collected a team-high four ground balls, and Dioneda extended her scoring streak to four games, netting a pair of goals. In goal,
Megan Kolopsky turned away seven shots in the loss.
Colitz paced the Engineers offense, registering six points with five goals and an assist. Scofield tallied a hat trick and added an assist, Erin Riley had two goals and two assists and Michelle Denny chipped in with two goals and one helper. In goal, Erin Amarello stopped seven shots for her ninth win of the season.
RPI got out to a 5-2 lead just over 10 minutes into the contest, but Skidmore battled back with goals from
Allison Byrne and
Emma Olcott to climb within one. Scofield and Jamie Wakefield restored the Engineers three-goal lead at 7-4 with 4:52 remaining in the first half, but goals from Dioneda and Phillips bookended Mackenzie O'Neil's second goal of the season to cut the Engineers lead to 8-6 at the half.
Riley opened the scoring 1:52 into the second half and Colitz potted a pair of goals nine seconds apart to give the Engineers an 11-6 lead. Erin DeLucca scored with 20 minutes remaining, erasing Morgan's first goal of the game, but
Caroline Bowne sparked a 3-0 Skidmore run, collecting a ground ball and going end for her fourth goal of the season. Phillips converted a free position and
Paige DiAntonio added a goal to bring the Thoroughbreds back within two at 12-10.
Scofield stopped the Skidmore momentum, capitalizing from a free position at 10:13, but Morgan and Dioneda provided a response for the Thoroughbreds with goals coming 19 seconds apart. Colitz gave RPI a two-goal lead with 7:14 remaining and Scofield tallied the game-winner at 3:14 after Morgan found the back of the net at 4:17.
Skidmore outshot RPI 28-26 and owned a 20-16 edge in ground balls, while the Engineers had a 17-14 advantage in ground balls.
The Thoroughbreds host Clarkson University Friday, April 25 at 4 p.m.
